2021

  • May 2021 - Jonathan Cappola joined the group as a Ph.D. student. Welcome Jonathan!
  • April 2021 - Xiao passed her dissertation overview exam and advanced to Ph.D. candidacy. Congratulation, Xiao!
  • April 2021 - Our collaborative research with Prof. Cai at VTech "Collaborative Research: Far-from-equilibrium surfaces of high entropy alloys: interplay between frictional sliding and corrosion damage" has been funded by NSF-DMR-MMN. 
  • ​February 2021 - Our group's paper "Universal nature of the saddle states of structural excitations in metallic glasses" has published in Material Today Physics.  
  • January 2021 - Dr. Li presents a seminar, titled "Mesoscale material mechanics modeling for deformation behaviors in amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys", in the Materials Science & Engineering Department’s winter colloquium series at Northwestern University.
  • January 2021 - Tim Sullivan joined the group working on machine learning-enabled advanced alloy design. Welcome, Tim!

2020

  • October 2020-Our group has received a new award from NSF-CMMI-MoMs on “photomechanical behavior in photovoltaic semiconductors”, in collaboration with Dr. Feng Yan’s group.
  • September 2020--Xiao's paper "Interdiffusion induced high coercivity of rare-earth free Alnico/Pt thin films " has been published in Journal of Alloys and Compounds. Congrats, Xiao! ​
  • August 2020--Yucong's collaborative paper “In situ indentation and high cycle tapping deformation responses in a nanolaminate crystalline/amorphous metal composite”  has been published in Materials Science and Engineering: A. Congrats, Yucong! 
  • August 2020--Dr. Lin Li has been promoted as Associate Professor with tenure.
  • August 2020--Yucong completed a summer internship as a Materials Design Engineer Intern at QuesTek,  a global leading company​ in Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) who design new high-performance alloys.
  • August 2020-Our group has received a new supplement from NSF-CMMI on “Data-enabled accelerated search of amorphous and nanocrystalline dual-phase alloy to promote strength and ductility synergy”.
  • June 2020-Our group has received a new seed grant from UA Cyber Initiative on “Machine learning-enabled search for multiphase and multicomponent alloys with the enhanced mechanical performance”. This seed award is in collaboration with Dr. Feng Yan at MTE and Dr. Jiaqi Gong at Computer Science. Check out the news here! 
  • June 2020-Yi's paper Microstructural heterogeneity and mechanical anisotropy of 18Ni-330 maraging steel fabricated by selective laser melting: The effect of build orientation and height has been published on Journal of Materials Research. Congrats, Yi!
  • May 2020-Dr. Lin Li has been selected as 2020 Summer Faculty Fellow at Air Force Research Lab.
  • June 2020--Liang's paper Identifying flow defects in amorphous alloys using machine learning outlier detection methods has been published on Scripta Materialia. Congrats, Liang!
  • February 2020--Li's group delivered two talks at TMS. Yucong presented a talk on "Quantitative Analysis on Deformation of a Cu/Cu45Zr55 Multilayered Structure Combining In-Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy and a Finite Element Model". Xiao presented a talk on "Processing Generated Local Atomic Order Impact on the Nanoscale Mechanical Heterogeneity of Cu-Zr Thin Film Metallic Glasses". ​
            Ismael and Samuel also presented their summer NSF REU research projects at TMS 2020. Good job!

2019
  • October 2019--Our research on heterogeneity in metallic glasses has been selected as one of the Science Highlights in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Basic Energy Sciences (BES) program. Check out the news here!
  • August 2019--Yi Yao joined the group as a graduate student. Welcome !!!
  • August 2019--Xiao's first collaborative paper “Local mechanical and electrical behavior in CdTe thin film solar cells revealed by scanning probe
    microscopy
    ”  has been published in AIP Advances. Congrats, Xiao! Check it out!
  • August 2019--Dr. Li delivered a workshop presentation, “Multiscale modeling of shear banding in metallic glasses”, at DOE mechanical behavior and radiation effects principal investigators meeting. 
  • July 2019--Annual group lunch was hosted at Lai Lai restaurant.

  • March 2019--Li's group delivered two talks at TMS. Liang presented a talk on "Identifying flow defects in amorphous solids by Activation and Relaxation Techniques (ART) and machine learning outlier detection methods". Lin presented an invited talk on "Nano-scale heterogeneity in metallic glasses". Good job!
  • February 2019--Dr. Li was selected for an outstanding reviewer award for Acta Materialia. Congrats!

  • December 2018--Li's group received 2019 UA ORED Internal Funding on "Unveiling the novel characteristics of structure-mechanical property relationship in high entropy alloys through machine learning". Thank UA for the support!
  • November 2018--Dr Li gave a graduate seminar on "Nanoscale Heterogeneity on Deformation Behaviors of Metallic Glasses" at Materials Engineering Program at Auburn University. 
  • October 2018--Liang's ART data analyzer package is now available on GitHub. Great work, Liang!
  • October 2018--Neng's paper on "Chemical Variation Induced Nanoscale Spatial Heterogeneity in Metallic Glasses" has been published by Materials Research Letter. Congrats, Neng! Check it out!
  • September 2018--Dr Li's book chapter on "Shear transformation zone dynamics modeling of deformation in metallic glasses" has been published in Handbook of Materials Modeling, Second Edition, edited by Yip S, Andreoni W, Springer, 2018. Check it out!
  • September 2018--Keshab and Sharniece presented their work 2018 at Science and Technology Open House: Showcasing STEM Activities Across Alabama Institutions. Good job!

  • August 2018 -- Dr Li's paper on "Control of shear band dynamics in Cu50Zr50 metallic glass by introducing amorphous-crystalline interfaces" has been published in Journal of Alloys and Compounds. Check it out!

  • April 2018 -- Dr. Tian attended 2018 MRS spring meeting, presented an oral talk on "Spatial correlation of elastic heterogeneity tunes the deformation behavior of metallic glasses" and presented a poster "Lightweight, high conductivity, ultra-strong Al/Ca composite conductor"
  • April 2018 -- Neng successfully presented his PhD dissertation defense. Congratulation Neng!
